Hi
Â
On Friday lockdown restrictions here in Scotland eased a little
Â
So I took the opportunity to meet with an old friend and ex colleague from the events Industry
Â
I had planned to visit my folks anyway and see what I could do to help. Dad has late stage dementia and is a lot of work from my poor old mum and my brother.
Â
I mowed the lawn and vacuumed the house, them my brother and I took a load of junk to the dump. Then I went to meet my friend.
Â
He’d got in touch a while back to ask if I’d be interested in working with him when things (hopefully) open up for the industry later in the year.
Â
As it happens I do actually quite like the idea of some part time consultancy work - but strictly on my terms i.e part time and working from home.
Â
So I went over the water to the big city and spent a few hours checking out his new studio and discussing rough plans.
Â
He also brought me up to date with the effects the pandemic has had on all the companies and people we both know.
Â
Wow - a horror story. But there is hope. Things will never be the same but in itself that offers opportunity.
Â
I got three insights from the day.
Â
1. My dad’s condition reinforced the importance of using your time wisely while you are young and fit. He did that and gave his family a great life while fully enjoying his own.
Â
2. The power of location freedom. The part of town where my friend lives is constantly expanding. We spent over an hour stuck in traffic jams (during a pandemic lockdown) to travel a few miles. As always the sense of relief when I finally got on the ferry to my quiet, coastal home was palpable.
Â
3. Crises DO create opportunity. They make people think out of the box and come up with new ways to do things.
Â
The Internet makes all of these things more possible than ever before. If you know how to leverage it you will be more immune to pandemics and recessions than any vaccine can make you.
Â
I made a video about how SFM's All In One package can get you started fast a while back - watch it here
Â
Â
Cheers!Â
