Hi
I sparked quite a chat on Facebook yesterday withe a jokey post about the latest scam email I found in my spam folder.
I’m sure its the same for you but I probably get at 10 of these per day. Usually they are from some Nigerian billionaire who has bequeathed his fortune to someone who just needs your bank account to clear the funds.
Or a lottery you never entered
Or a charitable grant ……
This one was from Bill Gates (lol) He and his wife Melinda’s foundation had picked 10 random recipients of $5million
I was one of the lucky ten! Woop!
As you know these are easily given away by terrible spelling, punctation and grammar, weird looking email addresses, the fact they are in your spam marked as dangerous and the general ridiculous nature of their claims.
But some are more sinister. Like the one that one of our friends fell foul of when my partner’s Facebook account was hacked last summer
The scumbag who did this posed as my partner and sent begging texts to a selection of her contacts.
Most of them smelled a rat or were genuinely worried and contacted her directly and make her aware of the scam so she could change passwords etc and at least make it stop.
But one friend who is generous to a fault, was conned out of £300.
The criminal knew enough about him somehow to convince him the text was real - even things that my partner ad forgotten. Clearly they had been able to access friends details too and use them as leverage.
The reason I’m talking about this today is that I don’t understand why the cleverer of these scammers don’t just use their intelligence to make money legitimately
They obviously have skills and are prepared to do the work
Running an online business for example would be easier, more profitable in the long run and isn’t liable to put you in jail one day.
I guess these “people” just have a different mindset to the rest of us.
Just be careful folks! These are devious creatures.
Bests
