Yesterday I mentioned that we
witnessed a sad and shocking event while we were in Tenerife last week.
I wanted to tell you about it because it kind of backs up the SFM and my philosophy that life is for living your life to the fullest.
We were renting an apartment near the surfers resort of
El Medano. It's a far quieter part of the Island than the bigger resorts of Los Cristianos or Americas. It's a very cool place and because its a little windy is the place for windsurfing.
We were having a glass of wine at one of the beachfront bars when we noticed a windsurfing sail very far out to sea. There was no-one on it that we could see and it was drifting, collapsed on the
waves.
I was about to alert one of the lifeguards when we saw them rushing down the beach to our right. There we could see a group of people desperately trying to resuscitate a man who was lying there.
Paramedics arrived and took over but to no avail. He was
dead. Got to admit I shed a few tears and am close to it again as I write this.
When we got back to the apartment I checked the local news websites and it turned out that this poor guy had suffered a heart attack while windsurfing. He was probably already gone by the time he was seen and pulled out of the water.
It turned out that the man was actually 64 years old.
To me that seems quite old to be participating in what is quite a dangerous sport but who am I to judge? I used to race motorbikes..
Carpe Diem.
Sad though this is it does highlight the point about about personal choice - living your life as you want to. El Medano is full of people who have this outlook on Life.
There isn't much info about this man as yet but its safe to assume that he was passionate about his sport. It may have been the
big passion in his life and he was probably aware of the risks - maybe that's part of the whole thing as it is for many sports.
To put things another way - most sports people and entrepreneurs realise that there is no gain without risk. In business you are probably not going to die if a risk turns out badly but you're probably not going to significantly change your life if you don't
take the odd calculated risk.
You also never really know what's just around the corner so maybe it really is best to live for today and make sure your'e being the best version of you that you can be...
