On November 16th I will turn 50 (yikes!) I'll be in Tenerife - business as usual but from a sunny apartment terrace. Big deal you say - why are you
telling me this?
Well i was writing about this yesterday for my blog (feel free to read it here) after doing some research on the subject.
I'd also been talking to friend about this recently as we are both the same age and find ourselves having to kind of start again - Me as a digital entrepreneur, him as a full time artist.
We were both made redundant from good careers and have found that it's a difficult age to face that at. We both decided that we wanted to start afresh rather
than just trying to find another 9-5 and repeating the last 20 something years but with lower salaries and a bad attitude.
I've also found that a high %age of SFM and DEA members are in that age group and have turned to the internet to set themselves up for a better (and earlier) retirement.
So it turns out that there are a lot of people all over the world who are approaching or are in their 50's and are looking for a new start. Maybe you are too?
Typically at this age people experience a form of disillusionment or confusion:
(From an article in The Huffington Post)
1.The kids have grown up so they don't have the job of parent anymore.
2. In a lot of cases the recession has meant redundancy and finding a new job - particularly an executive job is
tough. Even if they can find one they'll probably have superiors who are much younger (not easy) Maybe too they worry about a lack of computer skills.
3. They have spent too much time on un-fullfilling careers and now that retirement isn't so far off, are worried about how that's going to pan out.
4. For all of the above reasons they have more time on their hands - more time to think about the future.
But the truly great news is that in the digital economy people from this "baby boomer" generation are actually incredibly well equipped to transition to the digital economy.
It's comparatively cheap to start a profitable online business especially with an SFM education and business system. LIfe skills and experience are actually a big benefit in the online world.
As I say in my blog - Life After 50 Is The New Black
