Don't be fooled by the rankers!

I've been getting a lot of emails recently that are annoying - I'm sure you do too.

The ones I mean are the type that suggest they can teach you how to get  ranked high on Google very quickly. They go on to say that by buying their course you can sell this as a service to local businesses.

I looked into this and just wanted to share a bit of reality about ranking on Google.

I watched a demo of one of these guys where he posted a video for a local medical practice and got it to page one of Google in less than a minute. Now this is actually very easy but utterly useless. Here's why...

If you want to get a high ranking for your business you can easily do it but the only people who will find it are people who type the exact name of your business into the search bar.  So ask yourself - how many people are going to do that unless they already know your business? Exactly - none.

Getting a high ranking on Google or any other search engine is only good for business if it comes from a keyword that people looking for your services would actually type in:

If you are a dentist for example called Dr Tooth's dental services, Wigan. You could rank for that easily but as I say - who's going to type that?

People are far more likely to type something like  - emergency dental care in wigan aren't they?

That is very much harder to rank for as not only will every dentist in the area that has a website or listing be going for that but so will anyone using any of the words in that sentence or "keyword" or variations of it.

I'll grant you that showing a local business that you can get them on page one of Google in seconds would be very convincing to someone that didn't understand how search engines work. It might get your foot in the door but they'd quickly realise that they weren't getting any business as a result.

This is just an example of how much poor "digital marketing consultancy" is going on out there. It demonstrates the the deep lack of understanding of it but also highlights the reason digital marketing skills are in such high demand.

Better to offer an honest service than a missleading one I think or at least that what my mentors teach me.

Cheers !
