I caught an interesting article on the guy who created the famous Fred Basset cartoons back in the 60's - Fellow Scotsman Alex graham.
What was interesting is that he was
living a laptop lifestyle of sorts way before laptops were even invented. He took Wednesdays and Fridays off for golfing and didn't work in the afternoons.
He used his spare time to pursue other interests like painting and golf. his inspiration for the cartoons came from all his non-work activities. Working smarter rather than harder you might say.
Now it
used to be that a lifestyle like that was the only available to the privileged few: Wealthy heirs, talented artisans or criminals. Not so these days however. The ability to work online means that pretty much anyone can plot out a life which is not entirely dominated by the idea of work in the traditional sense.
To give you an example of what I mean. On Friday my partner and I decided to have a beach day as again she had no
driving lessons booked and the sun was out.
As I'm a keen photographer I too the camera and tripod and we headed down to the coast at Girvan and Ballantrae - about 60 miles from Glasgow where we live. We found a rugged stretch of coastline and spent a couple of hours walking along it, taking some photos and videos and picking up some driftwood.
Because this was a
weekday we had the place to ourselves - if you tuned you back to the distant road and looked out to sea it was being on another planet - awesome - very good for the soul.
There are actually a few ways we can and will monetize this enjoyable day off without going out of our way and it certainly didn't feel like work.
For one thing - I got some great seascape shots
looking out toward the Ailsa Craig and Ireland which I can add to my online portfolio and sell as canvas's and some nice video sequences that I can use as backgrounds for promo videos.
As for the driftwood: We clean that up, paint it and turn it into clocks, candle holders and interesting decorative pieces. These will go for sale online along with the hand made cushions and curtains my partner makes. I'll be doing her
website shortly so that she can start living the digital lifestyle too - then she'll be able to turn her passion and creativity into a business too.
So you see its possible to completely change the way you work - you can make work something thats just integrated into the way you want to live your life with an online business - Work stops being something
that you need to try and fit your life around !
