A misty morning here in Glasgow - very quiet as it's a bank holiday weekend.
I'm constantly amazed at the type of people SFM is attracting. I think just a
few years ago this might not have been the case but the internet and e-commerce in general has come so far in that short time that some really high calibre people people are now making the transition from the old, frankly knackered economy, to the new thriving online economy.
They are doing this by re-skilling. By getting the skill sets that are fast becoming a necessity in this wonderful age of technology and
connectivity.
As a case in point - my new mate George, one of many people I met at Momentum day in January and have been in contact with ever since. George and I do a weekly video catch up and just bounce ideas around, share tips and just generally support each other.
George is a little older than me and is an amazing character. He spent his early years in
the Navy then became an entrepreneur. He has been involved in lots of businesses from publishing to buying an estate agency in Spain and running a chain of fashion stores.
He has (he won't mind me telling you) had and lost over £1million in the recession but in the spirit of hard working entrepreneurs he just picks himself up, dusts himself down and moves on (I should mention he has also had cancer). He has now moved on to
what, like many business people are, to what is obviously the place to be in business now - The Internet.
Although SFM members are far from typical people, they do share some common traits: A good work ethic, an entrepreneurial spirit and a refusal to let "the system" or anything else defeat them.
SFM basically gives people like George, myself and you the
tools and training to reinvent themselves. Unlike trying to find stable employment, especially for baby boomers like me and George (The 38-55 age bracket accounts for a lot of the membership) Running an online business does not require previous experience in the industry, does not require a CV demonstrating past achievements or any of the other stuff employers use to gauge your value. It does not have a glass ceiling, set hours, tyrannical bosses and
is not subject to the ups and downs of recessions.
All you need to bring is you, some good core values a solid work ethic and a strong desire to live a fantastic life. Jump in - the water is lovely!
Myself, George and some of the others will be doing some Google Hangouts next week and I'll be inviting you to hang out with us so keep an eye on your mailbox
to find out when. I'm really looking forward to meeting you!
I hope to work with you soon....
