I had an interesting Skype chat with an SFM colleague and friend on Friday. She wanted to ask me about an idea she had for an online education idea she has. 

She is based in Ireland and wants to build an online Irish language course. Since I have a Teaching English as a Foreign language (TEFL) qualification and an advanced TEFL online qualification she wanted to know about how that all works. 

TEFL use all of the advantages of the internet to run their business and teaching courses. There is a 20 hour classroom section followed by 100 hours of online study and work. The advanced online course goes deeper into the differences between teaching face to face and online. 

LIke all forms of real online businesses the TEFL course was developed then uploaded to the web so that it is more or less automated. You submit your work and a tutor grades it. The course content is all held on a server and includes, PDf's, videos and multiple choice tests. 

So although there is a lot of work involved initially in creating the course and marketing it as a business, it's very doable by following the SFM training and using the resources and tools provided.  Where TEFL falls down IMHO is that they don't really offer much advice on how you would become an online teacher. 

So I think my friend will get her idea up and running - she is already teacher after all and is just applying her SFM training to a field she knows about and loves. An interesting aside during our long chat: She spent 3 months in India last year and although the little village she lived in had not much in the way of basic amenities - the women collected water from a well for example - they had good internet connections, all had mobile phones - but no running water! 

Doesn't that just put things into perspective? The sheer scope of possibilities and the sheer reach of the internet. A brilliant teaching tool that can be accessed in some of the remotest places on earth. 

So you can apply digital marketing know-how to almost any field you can think of and use your training to connect with the people who are interested in it - people you will have something in common with and can help. That can be your business, and your lifestyle. 

Never ceases to amaze me that.
