I was watching Masterchef Uk last night which I find addictive for some reason, and it made me think about a chat I had with a friend who was setting up a restaurant a few years ago.
You see opening a restaurant if you have no big reputation as such, is a lot like building a website business and expecting it to somehow start attracting visitors right away. You'll get a few visitors just out of curiosity but unless you make a big impression and get them telling friends about you, those visitors will soon dwindle.
The major difference is that with the website you aren't
paying rent, staff or heating and lighting costs even when no one is coming through the door. That means you can take the time to learn how to get the traffic coming to you without being in a constant state of worry about what it's costing you.
Imagine if you opened a restaurant though and someone like Gordon Ramsay (or any other celebrity chef) took you under his wing and gave you the benefit of his years or experience,
reputation and even his signature recipes.
That is effectively what SFM does for people who want to start an online business. Stuart and Jay are very much like the celebrity chefs of the digital marketing industry.
The back office is full of their signature recipes for success and the training is like a young chef having Gordon Ramsay (actually maybe
that's a bad analogy -... OK - Jamie Oliver ) watching over their every move.
My friend's restaurant wasn't a success unfortunately but then the fail rate for new restaurants is extremely high. He reckons if he had had great mentors helping him get started, things would have been very different.
So whilst Stuart and Jay, the SFM community and myself
