I had a few thoughts yesterday when I was hill climbing in Scotland - another Munro under my belt! (Ben Narnain) About as far from the Rat Race as you can get but i found myself thinking....
It's a bit ironic when you think about it that we basically work just to pay bills. I guess that's what gives us the phrase "Rat Race" isn't it?
Many people work just to keep a roof over their heads and have little or nothing left at the end of the week or month for much else. Even sadder is that in our current
society lots of people actually do not earn enough even to do that and are in increasing debt.
It's a vicious circle. We get ourselves in the position where we have to keep earning to pay for the things that earning enables us to buy. The really important stuff like mortgages - the roof over our heads - tend to involve substantial debts that take most of our lives to repay.
But that's the system we were born into. It was put in place for us a long time ago and by and large it works - at least if we are fortunate enough to be born in one of the more "civilised" parts of the world.
The thing is though that increasingly it just isn't working. Look at the situation banks and governments have put us in over the last 5 or 6 years and in previous recessions. It's the definition
of madness - To keep doing things the same way and expect different results.
Without meaning to be sensationalist in any way it's actually down to entrepreneurs now to save the world. Entrepreneurs have created the new economy: The digital economy and it's actually thriving.
There is no mystery to that. Advances in technology have literally changed the way
the world works now. You could argue that this has been at the cost of traditional jobs but the flip side to that is that it also offers us far more opportunity to adapt and to live life in a different way.
It's no longer just for technically minded people as it was a few years ago. Technology has become much more user friendly and most of have access to more technology now than NASA had when they put a man on the
moon.
You need some new skills and a different mindset to get onboard but sooner or later as technology and the way we live continues to change, we will all have to do that anyway. So why not start now? when we are literally at the tip of the iceberg in what is still a young and prospering industry.
