Let me tell you a short story 

Some time go I got a Facebook friend request from a young guy in Nairobi and after a couple of exchanges I realised he was a genuine guy and so we have been chatting on Facebook from time to time. 

Yesterday we had our longest conversation and I found out a bit more about him and the life he leads. It made me realise just how lucky we are in the "civilised" world, and how we have so much opportunity at our fingertips - opportunities that guys like Lamin would do anything for. 

Yesterday when we chatted Lamin was coming off a long night shift as a security guard and going back to his tiny, cramped house which he shares with his parents and lots of brothers and sisters. His wage pays for everything. 

The sad thing is that this is a well educated guy who did well in business studies and he knows all about the digital economy. He would love to start an online business but he can't afford a laptop, the internet connection (if he could get one where he lives) or even the modest SFM subscription and training fees.

Know what's even sadder - I have an old Laptop I could give him but its the old story of "Give a Man a fish" - If he couldn't get online or afford even a small training cost. he would probably end up selling it on. His only access to the internet is via a cheap smartphone - his only luxury and it connects him to a world of opportunity just out of reach. 

Meanwhile most of us have computers, tablets and iphones that are more powerful that the computers they needed to send a man to the moon. We take them for granted and we have cheap, fast broadband, and if we are honest can easily afford something like the monthly fees for a high quality training platform and business in a box - we spend more on coffee or treats per month. 

I hope that Lamin can find the funds to do this - if he can I'll happily send him the laptop - and that I can help him to build a better life. He deserves it - he doesn't have that entitlement thing that so many spoilt westerners have - the feeling that we should get things for nothing or for little or no work.
