I read a cool blog post yesterday all about becoming wealthy
A lot of the tips were things I’ve shared myself pretty often
Things like investing in yourself, finding mentors, learning new skills, spending time learning only from people who have got to where you want to be
But one the tips I particularly like was around being careful about your spending when you are on the journey to success
After all it does take some financial investment and success doesn’t usually come overnight.
One of them is so simple and took me back 20 some years to when I worked on a salmon farm on a small Scottish Island.
- Don’t go food shopping on an empty stomach or without a list!
We did have a couple of local shops but once a month would take the boat over to the nearest “big” town of Oban where there was a large supermarket.
We would often not only be hungry when we got there but all those shiny lights and shelves packed with goodies we couldn't get on the Island often led us astray.
We’d unpack our big shopping back home and find we had very few actual meals but lots of sweet treats and snacks. So we still had to buy from the limited and over priced stock at the local shops.
Eventually we learned to make a list and stick to it and to go for lunch in Oban before we hit the supermarket.
Since moving out to another rural part of the Scottish coast 5 years ago I’ve also found some ways to save on costs
Most recently I saved a small fortune on a boiler replacement simply by sourcing the boiler myself and collecting it rather than paying the mark up the engineer would have charged if he’d done it.
When we bought this house the kitchen needed a complete remodel. Phoning round the local trades revealed a long waiting list and very high quotes for materials like the butcher's block work tops we wanted
Again with a little savvy and a lot of Google I was able to source all the materials - Belfast sink, butchers block tops, fancy mixer tap, cooker and hob myself - very much cheaper
In fact the guys who were able to do the fitting asked me where I got those prices!
Here's the point though
I could have paid full price for these things. It would have saved me some time for sure (and man that boiler was heavy!)
But the money I saved was spent on advertising my affiliate products and services and the results more than paid for the kitchen and boiler.
I will say though - having an Internet based income does give me a lot of free time to do research and running around to make savings like above.
If I’d still been tied to the 9-5 I’d probably have just paid the man!
Have a great weekend
Bests
