If you are anything like me you’ll have a little (or large) collection of self/personal development type books?
Mine include the classics - Think and Grow Rich and Rich Dad, Poor Dad
I also have books by Gary Vaynerchuk, Richard Greene, Russel Brunson, Eckhart Tolle and others
Some I’ve read several times, others only half way
These days I’m more of a digital reader so I have some digital versions on file and I use my library’s digital download borrowing system “Libby”
I’ve just finished one of those and wanted to recommend it to you
It’s called First Man In, by Ant Middleton
If you’re in the UK you may have seen some of his TV stuff
He’s the ex SBS - the Marines version of the SAS guy who takes contestants - sometimes celebs - through SAS style gruelling physical and mental exercises
Not my usual kind of book I must admit
But amazingly inspiring stuff you can learn a lot from
I didn’t know he had done a recreation of the horrendous forced voyage that captain Bligh and his remaining loyal crew were forced to take following Mutiny on the Bounty
Like Bligh, Ant and his volunteer crew did the same voyage on a small 18th century wooden boat
As team leader Ant wanted everything to be as close to authentic as possible
The crew (which included a solo round the word yachtsman) had the same rations, tools and resources as the that of the infamous captain had back in 1789
There was a support vessel tracking them but Middleton insisted it be out of their sight at all times.
The voyage sounded utterly horrible but most of the crew (apart from the experienced sailor) made it despite risking permanent damage to life and limb
The book is worth reading just for this section
And the lessons learned - which are summarised at the end of each section - are pretty powerful.
None of us are likely to experience anything as extreme in our journeys in business and our search for freedom and independence
But we can learn a lot about working through the challenges we do face
Add this one to you reading list
All the best!
Dave
