I haven’t sent many mails this week - I’ve discovered that less is more sometimes
But I would like to share an insight with you today all about the power of mentorship
A friend of ours came to stay a few weekends ago. Like me he’s a guitarist, in fact he plays on cruise ships for a living after studying jazz guitar at Birmingham university for several years.
He brought a really nice vintage guitar he’d bought recently and after a few glasses of wine inevitably the amps came out and we had a jam for an hour or two.
Now whilst I’m completely self taught and play by ear Alan has all the theory stuff under his belt.
I decided after that weekend that I wanted to stretch my own playing out a little - get out of my comfort zones as it were
So as I do when I want to learn anything I jumped online to see what was there.
Of course I found lots of information about scales and theory - lots of excellent online guitar teachers
But as with when I wanted to get serious about starting an online business and had made a few mistakes
I realised that I really needed mentorship because I already know lots of scales and patterns etc
What I want is someone to show me how to use it all musically in different ways than I already know
So i took some time to find a musical mentor who was teaching EXACTLY what I want to learn
And having found him I bought his online course without a second thought.
I probably wouldn’t have done that a few years ago before I discovered the difference between teachers and mentors when it came to making a living on the Internet
Just as with guitar playing there are a ton of people out their who can teach you bits and pieces about doing business online
But that doesn’t really help all that much with the bigger picture
Mentorship does
And THE SIX FIGURE MENTORS do that better than most
You can learn to build fancy websites just as you can learn how to play lightning fast scales all over a guitar fretboard
But very few people will pay to see a guitarist playing scales and fancy websites don’t make money - impressive yes - but memorable? No
It’s what you do with them that counts and only people who have done it already and are doing it can show you how.
Cheers!
Dave
