Back when I was a business development manager in the events industry - just before I became the last of a large number of redundancies
I was already using the internet to find new clients for the business
The big difference though was of course TIME
My boss at the time was old school
He wanted his sales people to be out of the office a lot of the time.
So I would dutifully spend half my time on the road. I’d look for businesses that looked big enough to hold conferences, awards dinners and other events.
Or would at least have occasional needs to hire AV equipment (the less glamorous but more profitable) side of our business.
Knowing it was very unlikely I would walk in to a business, get to sit down with a decision maker and make a sale
I would ask for a name, leave a brochure and get as much relevant info as possible.
Then I would add all this to my database system and follow up by phone later to try and arrange an introductory meeting
The thing is, even by 2012 all this front end stuff: Driving around and passing out bits of paper could easily be done online.
Most companies knew by then that an internet presence was absolutely essential - much more so now - so all the information I needed was on their websites.
In, fact most of my new business - and I brought in a lot - was done this way. Long before I was unceremoniously dumped by my corporate “big brothers” I was looking for ways to leverage the Internet more fully
I could see that the old school way was just too restrictive. There’s only so much ground I could cover in the car after all and only so far we could actually go to serve customers anyway.
It screamed inefficiency
So, long story short, Now I work from home - or wherever I happen to be
My customers are from all over the world
I find them or rather they find me via internet marketing
Rather than having to try and guess whether a person would be a good fit for my products I can actually get a ton of information up front about their interests, passions, problems and aspirations
And I've found, not surprisingly, that my customers are a lot like me. It follows then that the solutions I have found myself, are a good fit for them
So all I basically do is provide them with solid, relatable information and point them in the right direction
And the systems I have in place take care of the rest. It takes a little time to set up and a bit of learning but then it’s literally a walk in the park
