This was the view from our door this morning (allow images to see the pic above)
The first of the snow this winter in Argyll
All very pretty but a nightmare for commuters if it keeps up as the forecasts suggests
It always reminds me of a few years back when I was a project manager for a big Audio Visual company based in Glasgow
We were running a high profile event in the Edinburgh Conference centre and the snow had been falling for a couple of days
I’d had to make a run back to Glasgow to pick up some extra equipment we needed
On the way back the M8 motorway that links the two cities had come to a standstill and typically I found myself in desperate need of a pee
With the snow falling hard and the motorway a car park, I had no choice but jump out of the van (passenger side by the hard shoulder luckily) and relieve myself.
I don’t think anyone noticed as i had may back to the traffic and the snow was so thick you couldn’t see more than a couple of feet anyway
But boy was it cold!
Eventually I got to the EICC and the guys grabbed the equipment and scurried off to rig it
The show went without a hitch and I stayed to help out with the 2am de-rig and homeward run
I think we got back around 7am
To be honest this last minute, against clock, fighting through adverse weather can be quite exciting (not so the tedious hours stripping it all down after the event) when you are younger
But the thought of doing that now as some of my old colleagues still do on a freelance basis - the 2010 recession having made most of them redundant
Not so much!
These days when I open the curtains and see a blanket of snow I feel so grateful that I work from home
If I’m completely honest, sometimes I go back to bed and work from there (as I’m doing now)
And sometimes from bed I check my emails and find that I’ve earned some big fat commissions as I slept.
As a baby boomer now in my fifties, I could not have imagined that this kind of lifestyle would be possible when I started working.
No internet, no email, no mobile phones and no alternative to exchanging your time for money
And amazingly that wasn’t really very long ago - about 30 years I’d say
Now technology is advancing that much in a single day.
Keeping up with it isn’t easy
But it is much easier with a lot of help, training, support, guidance and actual systems that can help you ski on top of it having the time of your life
Instead of being bogged down by it
