Did you know that digital cameras have actually been around since 1975?
They were a huge disappointment then and for some
years after
I was a very keen photographer when I got my first digital camera in around 1994 - it came with my first computer
I thought it was crap - but I could see the huge advantages of it - if they ever got better (and they did)
Like me, most people then couldn’t imagine these things would ever replace film
We certainly couldn’t imagine Kodak - who had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of ALL photo paper in the world - going bust because of them
But that
happened.
It’s easy to see why with hindsight: No more waiting to see how many of your photo’s would turn out well when they came back from the chemist a week later
You just took a picture the instantly saw the result
If it wasn’t perfect you could always edit it later.
Then you could share it on social media, by email or even sell it online
This is all just common place now and very few of us miss the old days of film cameras
Now we
have top quality digital cameras in our phones which also take high quality videos
That’s actually how I earn my living these days - not as a photographer (although I do sell pictures online too)
But by making videos that introduce people to products and services that I sell online.
If you’d told me I’d be doing that back in 1994 I’d have assumed you’d lost your mind.
What happened to Kodak has happened to lots of companies since then and will happen to tons more over the next 10 years
If you were or
are an employee in those industries you might think this is a bad thing
If you are me on the other hand it’s an absolutely great thing (It can be for you too with the right skills)
Actually it’s neither a bad or good thing its just a thing
But it IS happening
So don’t be Kodak or HMV, or Maplin or Toys r Us or Blockbuster, Border Books, Game, Jessops, Comet……
Be more Uber or Netflix or Airbnb
By getting the skills that are relevant for a fast moving world - HERE
Cheers!
