Of all the industries that are being and will be changed drastically by the Internet I’ve always thought that Retail, Banking and Real estate would be amongst the first
And over the last few years I’ve definitely seen that happening
When we sold our place in Glasgow just over 3 years ago for example we chose an online Estate Agent to market it.
(I’d have done that myself in fact but didn’t have access to
all the advertisers they had - although I’m sure that will change soon too)
So we paid a one off low fee (no commission) and they sold the place in 10 days for well over the asking the price - before they even got round to delivering a for sale board!
Now when I’m watching TV I see loads of ads for online
house sales.
When it comes to Banks I’m sure you don’t need me to point how many local branches are closing down
2 out of three have closed in the little town of Dunoon near where we live now.
The only reason
we still go to a bank is to deposit cash since some of my partner’s pupils pay with cash
Though that’s changing fast as more and more people realise the convenience of mobile and Internet banking
It’s all about making things easier, less expensive, more accessible and far less
time consuming
The Elephant in the room is that as these industries change (or disappear) lots of jobs go with them
You here that every time you watch the News - at a time of your choosing since TV is now controlled largely by us the consumers!
I honestly can’t think of many industries that are immune to the Internet’s massive power of change
The only they’ll survive is to adapt which is what Charles Darwin identified as the key to the survival of any species.
As individuals we also
need adapt - to create security for ourselves in a rapidly changing world.
And why wouldn’t you want to when you consider how much easier, less expensive, more accessible and far less time consuming earning your living online is?
