The times sure are changing as Bob Dylan sang all those years ago
Of course that was many years before the internet
showed us just how quickly things can change!
I remember thinking just a few years ago that a lot of High Street institutions would soon be under threat
When I used to pay cash into my local bank for example I used an automatic pay in machine.
I’d just pop the money into a slot and it would be counted and credited to my account. But more often than not a member of staff would approach me and offer to put the money on the slot for me.
To be honest I felt a little sorry for them. It was obvious they were trying to look busy - to justify their jobs.
Since then there have been many bank closures - only last week one of the UK’s biggest bank groups announced closure of hundreds more branches.
All because more and more of their customers are doing their transactions online via home computers, tablets and mobile phone apps.
It’s the same for traditional estate agents. We sold out house in Glasgow online in 10 days paying only a fixed rate, low fee without also paying a %age commission of the sale fee.
Add that to the number of massive, well established retail and manufacturing concerns that have gone down in recent years.
As a photographer I never expected to see Kodak disappear.
As a musician I never expected record companies and physical products like CDs all but vanish
Who knows what’s next?
Cos “the times
they are a changin” and we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg so far.
But the good news is that we can re-skill and learn how to profit form all this disruption
And just like we soon won’t need to go to a bank to do our business or pay an estate agent to sell our houses - we won’t find those skills by
traditional routes.
We need to get them where they are based - on the internet - from people like the founders of SFM and DEA
