When I worked as a business development manager for the Glasgow branch of a very big, worldwide audio visual services company there was one thing that I valued most
Having a big support network behind me
Because even though our branch was a small part of a big machine I could call upon much bigger resources and expertise when I met with clients to discuss their events
Like for example when one of those clients was NASA
They were exhibiting at a huge Astronautical congress in the SECC in Glasgow and wanted some pretty fancy audio visual support as you can imagine.
They wanted to project over the river Clyde onto the BBC building
for example (The BBC said no)
So they settled instead for a 50 metre projection screen which took up one entire hall of the SECC
At Glasgow we didn’t have the resources to build a custom screen of that size and we didn’t have the massive £250K projectors required to fill that screen with footage of their
latest space station.
But I knew where I could get them from elsewhere in the company so I won the business.
As a self employed Internet business owner working on my own from a remote part of the Scottish Highlands I actually have a similar level of support from SFM and
DEA
As well as the amazing full time dedicated support staff I also have hundreds of fellow entrepreneurs to call on
I suppose it MIGHT be possible to build an internet business on your own without that level of support - but I wouldn’t want to try
It would cost a fortune and would take much longer to get results.
Aside from that, in a game where you are the boss, staff, CEO, CFO, Marketing manager and everything else in the company - its just priceless to always have someone to talk things through with.
That’s the huge advantage that the SFM community has - You might be working alone a lot of the time but you are never ALONE
Priceless.
So if the idea of going it alone worries you and is stopping you from getting started - don’t let it!
Cheers!
