I was watching a documentary on Youtube yesterday that I found incredibly inspiring.
It was all about one of my
guitar heroes David Gilmour - best known as the guitarist with the legendary Pink Floyd.
Aside from the musical side of things what I found most inspiring was the “risk” he took way before the band had achieved anything at all.
In fact they were so impoverished
that David was treated for malnutrition.
While chasing the musical dream he was also studying for a degree in languages at University.
Mid way through his exams he quit - he literally just stopped turning up for the exams
Why?
Because he realised that if he continued he might sacrifice what he saw as his one chance to succeed in the music business.
So for him, getting a degree and therefore having a safety net if (as seemed likely at the
time) the band never got anywhere was the biggest risk
The “risk” for him was to give up on the dream and settle down into what would have been an ordinary, comfortable life.
The rest is history: 250 million album sales, a place in music history, wealth
beyond measure - he sold one of his houses some years ago and - as he didn’t need the money - gave it to a charity for homeless people (£5million)
You see examples like this amongst most successful people.
They turned their backs on traditional education, the ordinary life and put everything into their
passion
Nowadays you don’t need to be an amazingly talented artist or to have an all consuming passion to live the kind of life you actually want.
The Internet and the digital economy has levelled the playing field for all of us.
All you need is a a strong desire to escape the mundane and live life on your own terms, a proven system to do it with, some commitment and to surround yourself with the right people.
You DONT need to take a massive “risk” like David Gilmour did
