When I found myself at a crossroads a few years back:

Redundant from a 12 year career, no job, 47 years old and with poor prospects of finding a similar job, I new I needed to re-skill.

I needed flexible skills that, even if I didn’t use them immediately, could be “banked” as a little security for the future.

I got the opportunity to study Teaching English as a Foreign Language at a reduced cost. So I did a 120 hr course - 2 days in a classroom and the rest online and got the qualification. 

Then I did a further 40hr course on doing TEFL online. 

I’ve never yet used those skills because in the process I discovered that internet marketing would be a far better skill set - one that would be needed even if I were to build a teaching career.

I still have those skills and qualifications to fall back on but doubt I ever will. 

I believed then and much more so now, that having internet marketing and business skills is the best investment an individual can have for the foreseeable future.
