Yesterday I sold what used to be one of my most prized possessions.

My all singing, all dancing digital recording workstation. 

Truth is it had been gathering dust for 2 years since my partner and I decided to disband our rock group Cactus Rose. 

I used it for the first time in years a month ago or so to record a local band we had met and last week got a call from them asking If they could buy it.

We decided that it’s far more use to them than it is to us so off it went. We got a good price considering it’s age AND we can use it whenever (if ever) we want to. 

Technology has moved so fast in the last 10 years that my little Macbook can now do the same job (and doesn’t weigh a ton or take up a whole desk)

I’m sharing this because its a great example of how progress makes life easier. 

A few years before I bought the workstation it would have taken a room full of mega expensive kit and a highly skilled specialist engineer to record a full band. 

A few years later a laptop can do the same job. A better job in many ways. 

At the same time technology has made it possible to run an international business from the same laptop. 

This has taken us out of an elitist world - where only whizz kids can play the game - to a world where anyone can get the skills to create exactly the life they want to lead. 

In the digital world of the internet everything - music, photographs, writing, video, saleable goods is reduced to information in a form that can be manipulated very easily. 

It’s quite a feeling to know that you could be dropped off almost anywhere in the world with only your laptop and as long as you could connect to the internet you could earn a living.

Some people hate progress - they complain that no-one writes letters anymore, or that books are becoming redundant etc…

Me - I love it - it just keeps making life, easier, more fun, less cluttered - what’s not to love?
