How to make a sale (online)
Following yesterday’s diary salesman inspired rant on how not to make a sale I thought I’d
look at the other side of the coin today.
I should explain that a lot of my background has been sales based both as an employee or as an entrepreneur.
I’ve done telesales and field sales and have sold everything from frozen fish to oil paintings.
BUT I’VE ALWAYS HATED - “SALES”
As in the - by the book - step by step methods that are usually taught. Those create people like the guy I discussed yesterday and worse still - the dreaded car salesperson!
My method has always been a friendly, natural approach and I never cared about NOT getting every sale. I wasn’t afraid to just knock the next door.
But in the offline world that is a tiring approach: It means more shoe leather or tire tread, more
phone calls, more effort. It’s basically a funnelling process.
You start by approaching a wide range of people and by elimination you arrive at sales.
Internet marketing works in exactly the same way but with some major differences - here are a few:
1.We don’t need to start with a really wide audience because we can get a lot of information online that helps us concentrate on only those who are interested in what we sell.
If we do sell things that have mass market appeal however we go wider than a traditional business ever could - worldwide 24/7/365 in
fact.
2. We can use automation to do the sales for us and to help build relationships with potential customers.
That means we don’t need to be so focussed on closing every sale aggressively (like the diary jerk i talked about yesterday)
3. We don’t need to chase or persuade people. We can keep in touch and add value by building lists and emailing. Lets face it it’s easier to hit “unsubscribe” if you don’t want to hear from someone ever again than it is to tell them face to face or on the phone.
4. We do not need to sit in an office
from 9am to 5pm, 5 days a week with targets over our heads and/or a boss looking over our shoulders.
In short we do not need to be “SALES” people !
Works for me - always has
SFM taught me how to translate that from the offline world to the online one. They can show you too if you've always hated the idea of ....
