Your ambitions vs your opportunities

Do you have big ambitions for your life but feel that your current situation is stifling them? 

I know I felt that way when I was in the corporate world.

Although I was a business development manager working for a huge multi-national I was based in a very small branch of that company. 

A small cog in a very big wheel. 

There wasn’t anywhere left to go unless I was prepared to uproot myself and my partner and move to another part of the country - or the world. Even then opportunities to do that were slim.

To be honest though I wasn’t passionate enough about the job to do that. I knew there had to be something more. 

Then along came the recession and I found myself on the corporate scrapheap anyway. 

Since then, after finding the SFM and DEA - taking control of my opportunities - I’ve achieved many more of my ambitions that I ever did (or could have) in the corporate world. 

I seriously don’t miss all that ladder climbing, backstabbing, nepotism, favouritism, grovelling, never mind the commuting, long hours and wasted time. 

Right now my elderly parents are visiting us for the first time since we moved to our place in the country and its been a genuine pleasure being able to spend time with them during the week. 

I hadn’t realised just how old and infirm they are becoming. My dad walks with a stick and has really struggled with some of the steep inclines and stairs that are a feature of where we live.

It’s made me realise that I won’t have them forever and that they are going to need a lot more help and support over the coming years. 

I’m very very grateful that I’ll now be in a position to help a lot more than in the past when I was totally absorbed by work - and not really getting anywhere. 

SFM and DEA - Stuart, Jay and everyone in this amazing community - have played a big part in this.

Not by handing me a new life on a plate - but by showing me what’s possible and how to get it.
