I was talking on the phone to an old friend and ex colleague from my audio visual industry days yesterday.
During our chat I
was explaining affiliate marketing to him and he couldn’t believe how much better a business model it is than Audio Visual services and equipment hire.
Don’t get me wrong that industry used to be pretty amazing back in it’s day back in the 80’s and 90’s.
Lighting, sound and video equipment was going
through a bit of a revolution. Big companies had money to spend on corporate events and they all wanted to outdo the competition by being seen to use the flashiest, latest bells and whistles at their events.
Even a basic projector needed an expert technician to set it up for a small boardroom meeting. An AV company could charge pretty much what they liked for their
services.
This all fine when the economy is in great shape, and when technology is new and requires expertise to use.
But when times get tough and the tech gets more user friendly it’s a very very difficult industry to make a profit in.
You still need to buy and maintain the equipment, you still need to store it somewhere suitable: Properly heated, secure and close to the main road infrastructure - expensive.
You still need to pay experienced and talented staff -
even when times are quiet and budgets get slashed.
The current recession really highlighted how risky it and many traditional business models are.
Customers either stopped doing events or would only pay a fraction of what they used to for the same service - if you didn’t do
the event at the price they were prepared to pay - someone else would.
But all those overheads didn’t go down - they went up.
At the same time technology gets cheaper and easier to use. Where once it was more
economical to hire a projector when you needed it, now it was cheaper to buy one.
Many AV companies went down the tubes. The bigger ones - like the one I worked for - were able to weather the storm by massively cutting down on staff (like me). They would hire freelance technicains when required rather than having them on full time salaries.
Some people though - like my friend - Took advantage of this,
He went out on his own as a consultant. He had no equipment, he just hired from the big companies that survived, He hired the same freelance staff as required. He had no big warehouse to pay rent on. He had no salaries to pay.
I considered doing the same thing when I was made redundant but then I discovered the online affiliate marketing business model.
Very few overheads, no staff, no vans and trucks to hire, no stock to manage.
It also
meant I could sell whatever I wanted and could do it all from literally anywhere since, unlike my friend, I don’t actually have to be present to conduct my business: It happens automatically even in my sleep.
Better still I chose to sell digital education products - fast becoming the biggest industry on the planet.
I think you’d have to be crazy to start any other type of business these days.
You’ll need to master some new skills, align yourself with the right people. Get the best selling, most profitable products and services on the market and network with people on the same
wavelength as you.
There’s only one place I know of to get all that in one package and that is with SFM and DEA
