I gotta tell you, this is the life ......

My good friend and fellow SFM/DEA partner Mark (in fact the guy that introduced me to this life-changing business) posted this on Facebook today

“I gotta tell you, this is the life. I’m sitting waiting for a flight to Doha at Larnaca airport doing my business and making money from a bar drinking Keo. A whole new experience!”

He’s just relocated form England to Cyprus and when he wrote that he was en-route to an SFM/DEA event in Australia. He’s currently on a year long travelling adventure.

I felt his sentiments exactly yesterday as I gazed out of my window in my new home on the stunning Scottish Coast. Like Mark I had just made several big sales in my sleep and was marvelling at the lifestyle I’ve been able to build.

When the corporate world put me on the scrapheap or “Provided me with the option to pursue other careers” LOL I thought I was in a bit of a pickle to put it mildly.

I’d spent my career to that point in a very niche industry. An industry that was struggling due to the recession. So there weren’t really any suitable openings in the same industry - especially for a 47 year old.

When I started putting together a CV for the first time in over 12 years It didn’t look good - brilliant for my industry - but not for many others.

You see it was a bit of a mixed bag of skills: I could set up PA systems for events, I’d done Autocue for a bunch of famous people, I knew my way around projectors, Cameras, Video walls, I had done some project management for live events and I’d been pretty successful at business development.

But none of that was much good to me when I tried for business development/sales jobs in other industries.

What was your target? they’d ask - Didn’t have one

What was your KPI? - Whats that?

You see what had drawn me to the Audio Visual and live events industry was that it didn’t have any of that bullshit - it was pretty informal. As long as you were doing your job and bringing on the results everyone was happy.

It was and industry  full of interesting, slightly eccentric and very talented, passionate people.

But when I discovered the SFM in my search for a sustainable online business where I could just be me I found that my mixed bag of talents and experiences were perfect for the job.

BY that I mean I had a god mix of creative and business skills but more than that I had become very resourceful, open to learning and adaptable.

SFM taught me that whatever your skills, interests and experiences are - they make you unique - and in the internet world those are invaluable.

If you add a new, digital skill set to whatever you have - and SFM provides those skills - the world as it is now really is your oyster.

And although you might think my particular background puts me at an advantage that’s not really relevant.

Mark who I mentioned was a lawyer. Other people I know who are doing this include Lorry drivers, taxi drivers, business owners, ex-corporates, full time mums, brewery managers, travel agents, property developers, musicians, photographers, doctors, soldiers ……

Their ages vary from 20 something to 70 something.

EVERYONE has a chance here.
