Bill Gates - "Businesses who are not on the internet will not have a business".

Quite a few years ago now I worked as the assistant manager of a large salmon farm in the Scottish hebrides. 

It started as a summer job which my cousin arranged for me (he was one of the senior managers) But I loved it there, loved being out all day on the sea - messing about in boats I guess. 

It had it it’s ups and downs - literally sometimes in heavy weather! and after a few years I returned to the city to pursue music. 

Years later I was a business development manager for an big Audio Visual/events company (yes I have been around quite a bit!) and decided to drop my cousin, who I hadn’t spoken to since, an email.

In his reply he congratulated me on getting “A real job” 

A year later I was made redundant from that fantastic “Real” job….

I’ve long since stopped feeling sorry myself about that - in fact I now see it as one of the best things that ever happened to me.

But it’s worth mentioning that It’s Jobs that are made redundant - not the people who do them. 

When times get tough as with the recession that cost me my job and livelihood, the accountants take over and you become a number - an expense - you cease being a person. Even if you are still performing well, doing your “real” job and providing value. Doesn’t matter. 

The recession put a lot of people in the same boat as me but you know what? The technological revolution will make that look like nothing.

I chose to re-skill - to arm myself with the skills that matter now and that will be in huge demand over the next 10/20 years and beyond. 

I don’t have kids but if I did that’s what I’d be persuading them to do.

But you just don’t get those skills and education from the traditional system of school-college-University anymore. 

You get it from people like SFM and DEA who teach independence above all else - financial and lifestyle independence. 

These things are more possible for more people now than ever before BECAUSE of the evolution in technology (ironic since that’s whats also going to leave unskilled people in a very bad place) 

No such thing as “REAL JOBS” anymore - no such thing as job security.

If you want REAL - then get the skills, learn the systems...
