Wow - I watched An amazing documentary on UK TV last night which really backs up the message that myself and my Mentors at SFM and DEA are spreading.
The Documentary by BBC’s Panorama was entitled
“Could A Robot Do My Job”
If you are able to watch BBC’s Iplayer online from where you are - here is the link - WATCH HERE
If not - I made some notes for you on the main points.
As the title
suggests the film was about the incredibly fast rise of technology and how its already affecting the way we work and live and how that’s likely to develop over the next 10 - 20 years
A few quotes:
Baroness Morgan (Chair person for the digital skills committee
UK) “A lot of white collar will disappear or be transformed. The current system of education and training cannot cope”
Digby Jones (British businessman and politician, who has served as Director General of the CBI and Minister of State for Trade and Investment) “Get used to the fact that you might have 5/10 jobs in your life
and they might be in different geographic places. Be adaptable get used to learning a new adaptation of your skills - skilling up now needs to be ongoing”
The documentary also looked at driverless taxis (already common in parts of the sates) Driverless commercial vehicles (UK gov is investing £100 million in this - Jaguar, Landrover, Audi and Google are investing
heavily in driverless technology - Google have logged 1 million miles on their driverless cars so far) Driverless trains - already happening.
Some statistics: Over the last 15 years technology has replaced
800, 000 UK jobs but has helped create 3.5 million jobs.
A third of UK jobs ( 10 million) are at risk of going over the next 10- 20 years due to technological advances.
The jobs most at risk are the less specialized, less well paid, less skilled jobs as these are easily replaced by automation.
While The Industrial revolution’s machines replaced physical labour, the new technolgiocal revolution is replacing white collar jobs - administrative, accounting, secretarial, banking, travel agency work.
Two professors from MIT predict that we are going through the most
significant changes in human history.
They say that there is no worse time to have only “ordinary/middle skills” but no better time to have special skills - entrepreneurialism in particular but also creative and digital skills.
Entrepreneurialism they
state is the engine of job creation and has to become part of our education systems very soon.
They predict that companies will emerge that are super rich but which have very few employees.
All this is exactly
what SFM and DEA are about. Not just to show people how to start an online business but how to re- skill for the digital economy where this exponential growth in technology is creating Opportunity the likes of which we have never seen.
Basically folks - digital just makes EVERYTHING easier. Computer based technology doubles in power and speed every 2
years!
Where do you think all of this desperately needed education will come from ? The government? No way - not fast enough and they know it.
It will come from entrepreneurs who are already miles ahead. They will be the ones who will lead and profit
from the digital evolution - the education and all the products that will be sold (on the internet)
