Knowledge really IS power...

I was watching a TV programme called Storage Hunters yesterday (I’m kind of hooked on I must admit)

Don’t know if you’ve seen it - I’m sure there are variations of it all over the world.

Its a documentary style thing which follows people who make a living out of buying and selling the contents of abandoned storage lockers.

There are several main “characters” and the program follows them from the often heated auction part where they get a quick look at the contents of a bin then the fast and furious begins - to the part when they work out how much they’ve won or lost.

Often they don’t really know what they’ve bought and have to enlist experts to value items for them. They do this either online from their smartphones or by taking the items along to a local expert in person.

On last nights show one of them - a husband and wife team - had bought some aboriginal art and took it to a specialist dealer to be valued.

It turned out that although the art was reproduction it was still quite valuable so they had made quite a nice profit.

The reason I’m telling you this is because of what the bidder said to the collector.

She said - “Thanks for the knowledge - even if you don’t buy them, your information has been invaluable”.

The truth of that statement really struck a chord with me.

Because it’s equally true in any business - particularly an online marketing business - particularly one that deals in knowledge - like SFM

For our storage hunters a wide knowledge about lots of things is crucial for their business. They have to make fast decisions on how much they are willing to pay for what they’ve usually only had a short glimpse of.

Sometimes they are able to do a little research before an auction - again research is a crucial part of internet marketing (although research is much easier for internet marketers as there are so many places to do it)

For the salvage dealers though it’s more often a combination of gut instincts and knowledge. The more knowledge they have the better they do. If they know more than the other bidders they have a huge advantage.

That’s very much true with an online business too and its why members of SFM have such a huge advantage over everyone else who is struggling to get into this industry on their own.

Because they don’t have access to the the vast pool of knowledge that the SFM’s founders and community have.

Without that it’s a little like a storage hunter bidding blindly on things with no idea of what they are worth.

Knowledge really is power.
