Why are we trained to be afraid of freedom?

I read an article about Seth Godin - a famous blogger, entrepreneur and freedom lover - yesterday whilst looking for some content to share.

I think what he says about this fear of freedom is probably true. It's like that other weird phenomena - the fear of success.

I saw that first hand quite often when I was in bands.

I remember this with the singer in my first band: Every time we had a sniff of success - a record company asked to come and see us or a demo tape got a favourable reply from someone - he would try and sabotage us.

He would be late or just not turn up at all or would perform badly even though we were well rehearsed.

Eventually I realised that this was because he was absolutely convinced that we would fail. So much so that he convinced himself it would be easier to just get the failure over with as quickly as possible or better yet - avoid it all together.

But maybe it was fear of freedom too as Seth talks about. For most people the idea of being a successful musician looks like a lot like freedom after all.

I loved this comment from an "olderpreneur" at the end of Seth's blog

"When I was a teenager, I handprinted a t-shirt which said "Legalise Freedom!" One of my teachers sneered at me, "You don't know what freedom means!"

40 years later I think I have discovered that freedom is about finding myself. It's about revealing who I really am, my drives, my desires, my real ambitions, my talents. Why has it taken so long? Because I took on board what I "should" do in life, and how I "should" live my life. It seemed so safe to steer through life with these rules, but eventually I hit some hard walls. Those walls are telling you that you are not being yourself. What I have told myself is that I am willing to let go of my attachments to low energy, depression, anxiety and all the other signs that I am not living my life as a free person. So what I would say to you is, be brave and be yourself, that is your contribution to the world! By seeking your freedom you become an inspiration to others to find theirs!

Seth says dancing with freedom is scary...yes, it is! But it is so worth it! Let's do it!"
