Surviving and thriving in the new economy

Published: Wed, 06/10/15

Friends of mine sent me this quote from Sir Alan Sugar - the billionaire entrepreneur and host of The Apprentice yesterday : -

"I received my invitation to the recession, but I chose not to accept it"

Love it don't you?

I remember a lot of my customers when I was in the events industry having the same attitude. We all thought that if we stayed positive and didn't let everyone else's negativity get to us, we would get through the "credit crunch"

Trouble was those same customers now wanted our services for a fraction of the price - that's how they were getting through the recession!

It's a weird kind of logic typical of a failing, out of date economy. It just doesn't work -  If we all drop our prices do our expenses also drop? No they don't.

So savings have to be made. That's when jobs go and business becomes a total drag - a fight to survive.

The internet and technology in general is only going to add to this. Doing business online is cheaper and less clumsy so buying things online is cheaper. That means we need less shops.

Europe's biggest bank HSBC has just announced they will be shedding 8000 jobs in the UK - replaced by technology and the need to save money.

Despite our best intentions we couldn't avoid the recession.

We can however survive and absolutely thrive in the new economy that has risen from the ashes.

We just need to adapt, learn the new skills and go for it.

Cheers

Dave
